Hotels in Tbilisi Tbilisi Tbilisi (known as Tiflis before 1936), the capital of Georgia (since 12th century) is located in a hollow on the banks of the Kura river. In the south-west part of Tbilisi there is its ancient main body - the Old Town with its narrow streets and buildings: ruins of Narikala Citadel, Metekhi Temple (1278-93). High over Tbilisi stands enormous statue - the Mother of Georgia with a sword for her enemies in one hand and a cup of wine for her friends and guests in the other, she symbolises the love of freedom and the hospitality of Georgian people. Tbilisi today is a major economic and cultural centre of Georgia. Its territory reaches now more than 350 sq.kilometres, and its population - almost 1500000 (more than 80 nationalities). In Tbilisi one can find Griboyedov Russian Drama Theatre (founded in 1845), the Theatre named after Rustabeli (founded in 1921) and the Opera House named after Paloashvili (founded in 1851). |
